Osiris Shaft Fully Excavated: Granite Sarcophagus Found at Water Table
Detailed Account
Zahi Hawass's team completes the first full excavation of the Osiris Shaft — a three-level vertical shaft descending 30 meters beneath the causeway of Khafre to the water table. Level 3 contains a large chamber with a granite sarcophagus on an 'island' surrounded by water from the natural aquifer. Partially flooded tunnels extend from this chamber toward the Great Pyramid. The sarcophagus is made of the same Aswan red granite as the King's Chamber. The tunnels remain unmapped due to water flooding.
